WGC-Mexico Championship FanDuel Report

Last week at the Genesis Invitational, eight of my 12 picks made the cut and for the second time over the last three weeks, I was able to pick the overall winner. This week at the WGC-Mexico Championship, there is no cut! That’s right, the entire 72 player field will play all 72 holes at the Club de Golf Chapultepec. This is a par 71 course that measures 7,330 yards. 

Over the last three years, this course has seemed to favor the longer hitters (Dustin Johnson winning two of the last three years), though Phil Mickelson did win in a playoff against Justin Thomas in 2018. The fairways are on the narrow size, and even though the rough isn’t too long, there is a concern of the wooded areas along the rough. The greens are Poa, as they have been over the last few tournaments so I’ll certainly be looking at golfers who have found success on these types of greens.

Cash: Justin Thomas - $11,700:

Thomas is number two in my model this week, and his projected ownership is 10th among the field. I’m ok with playing him in Cash or GPPs if he stays under 20 percent owned. JT ranks third in SG: APP, 13th in Dr Dist, ninth in SG: P4, first in Opp Gained, and second in Prox: 125-150. He also isn’t a bad putter on poa, ranking 29th in the field. Oh, and in his last three starts in this tournament, he hasn’t finished worse than ninth.

GPP: John Rahm - $11,800:

Rahm’s projected ownership is around 11 percent as I write this on Tuesday night. I think this is a great spot for Rahm. He’s coming off a T17 at the Genesis, finished T9 at the Waste Management, and second at the Famers. At this tournament in 2018, he finished T20, and then T3 in 2017. For stats, Rahm ranks 20th in SG: APP, ninth in Dr Dist, 13th in SG: P4, and 15th in SG: P (Poa).

Pivot: Xander Schauffele - $11,100

Cash: Tyrrell Hatton - $9,100:

Hatton will most likely be the highest owned player in the price range, and by quite a bit. Why? Well, he’s the only golfer in this price range that has three straight top-20 finishes here (two of them are top-10’s). He’s 10th in SG: APP, fourth in SG: P4, 18th in Prox: 125-150, and 26th in SG: P (Poa). 

GPP: Kevin Kisner - $9,400:

Now, Kisner isn’t the longest player in this field, ranking just 51st in Dr Dist, but in a GPP I’m willing to roll the dice with him this week because of his history here. Over the last three years, Kisner has finished T27, 29th, and 11th. He should be under five percent owned, which is what you want for larger DFS tournaments. He ranks 23rd in SG: APP, 25th in SG: P4, 36th in Opps Gained, and sixth in SG: P (Poa).

Pivot: Bubba Watson - $9,900

Cash: Carlos Ortiz - $8,800: 

Ortiz will have ownership around 15 or 16 percent, which is high for this price range but that won’t deter me from being overweight on him. He’s third in SG: P (Poa), 26th in SG: P4, 16th in SG: APP, and 11th in Dr Dist. His last two events have ended with a T26 at the Genesis and then a T25 at the Waste Management. 

GPP: Cameron Smith - $8,700:

Cameron Smith isn’t too far behind Ortiz in my model, but his ownership is about 11 percent less. Some stats that really stick out to me here are Opps Gained where he ranks 12th, he’s 19th in Prox: 125-150, and fourth in SG: P (Poa). While he has missed his last two cuts, he did finish T6 in this tournament last year. 

Pivot: Sung Kang - $8,300

Cash: Marcus Kinhult - $7,500: 

This is the price range where things can get dicey, but we’ve found some success over the last few weeks. Kinhult only ranks 53rd in Dr Dist, but he’s top-25 in SG: APP, Opps Gained, and SG: P (Poa). He also ranks 12th in Prox: 125-150. 

GPP: Matt Wallace - $7,400:

Wallace finished T33 here last year, which isn’t awful considering his price. He’s 21st in Dr Dist, 24th in Prox: 125-150, and seventh in SG: P (Poa). 

Pivot: Sebastian Munoz - $7,900

Key Stats “Key”:

SG: APP = Strokes Gained Approach

Dr Dist = Driving Distance

SG: P4 = Strokes Gained Par 4 Scoring

Opps Gained = Birdie Opportunities inside 15 feet from green/fringe

Prox: 125-150 = Proximity 125-150 Yards from the Hole

SG: P (Poa) = Strokes Gained Putting on Poa Greens
